Week 1: Beginnings, Stonehenge, and the Shape of the Earth

Welcome to History of Science Online!

Hi everyone! Each week you will begin with a unit page like this one. Each unit page contains links to assignment pages for that week (see table below). Return to the unit page from any assignment page by clicking the Stonehenge image or the "Week 1: Beginnings..." subtitle above. In general, click either the week's icon or the subtitle link to return to any week's unit page.

Read this unit page very carefully! Print it out for reference, and check off each assignment as you complete it.

This unit page contains instructions for the following types of assignments:

Complete assignments in the order they are listed. If you have questions at any point, send me an email -- use the link to my name at the extreme top right of any page on this course website -- and I will get back to you within 24 hours.

*Work ahead if you can! The Due Dates listed above will not be enforced for this unit; they are included to help you anticipate the rhythm of ordinary assignments in subsequent weeks. The only absolute deadline is that you must finish all assignments listed in the table above during the first two weeks of class. Please be aware that beginning with Week 2, due dates will be strictly enforced. Any Week 1 assignments left incomplete at the end of this week will need to be completed next week in addition to the assignments for Week 2.

Note: Monday, September 1st is Labor Day holiday, so Week 1 ends on Labor Day weekend. Every week the Reflection, Web Project and Internet assignments are due on Sunday and Monday nights. Does this imply that you must work on this course during Labor Day weekend? By no means! You don't have to work on any weekend, let alone Labor Day weekend. Work ahead! To protect your Labor Day weekend, do not allow yourself to fall behind this first week! Get on a schedule from the start where you complete the assignments before they are due. Every week you can complete the Reflection, Web Project and Internet assignments before Friday night, so that you will always be able to enjoy your weekends free. You do not ever need to work on weekends for this course; see the sample schedules outlined in time management tips. You can even work two full weeks ahead if you wish. Nothing makes your work go more smoothly in this course than to get ahead and stay ahead.
